Part 1: Career Objectives and the Role of the Scholarship

My name is Muhammad Iliyasu from Hadejia Local Government in Jigawa State. I am currently a 100-level MBBS student at the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, driven by a profound personal mission to become a medical doctor. My career objective is to specialize in nephrology, the study of kidney diseases. This path was chosen not just out of academic interest, but from a place of profound personal loss. I lost my beloved mother to kidney failure, an ailment whose devastating progression I witnessed helplessly. That experience ignited a fierce determination within me to ensure that others do not suffer a similar fate.

My goal is to become a leading nephrologist in Nigeria, focusing on improving dialysis access, promoting renal health education to prevent late-stage diagnoses, and ultimately working towards making kidney transplants more accessible and affordable. While my journey begins in the North, my focus extends to all Nigerians, regardless of their background, ethnicity, or region, because illness knows no borders and every life has equal value.

Achieving this vision is a monumental task that requires unwavering focus and extensive resources. The journey through medical school is financially demanding, with the cost of specialized textbooks, research into nephrology, and potential conference attendance being significant.

A scholarship from the GBite Foundation would be the critical catalyst that transforms my ambition into attainable reality. It would lift the immense financial burden from my family, allowing me to dedicate myself entirely to my studies and research.

This support would empower me to seek out specialized training opportunities, access global medical journals, and build the exceptional academic record required to gain entry into a world-class nephrology program. The freedom to learn without financial anxiety would allow me to fully engage in volunteer work at renal clinics, gaining the practical, hands-on experience that is so vital. Ultimately, this scholarship would not just be an investment in my education, but an investment in the future health of countless families, helping me save the mothers, fathers, and children of tomorrow.

Part 2: Building a Resilient Nigerian Economy: From Farm Security to Digital Empowerment.

In view of my aspirations in healthcare, I see a direct and critical link to the theme of “Building a Resilient Nigerian Economy: From Farm Security to Digital Empowerment.” A resilient economy is built on a healthy population. Chronic illnesses like kidney disease can devastate a family’s finances and remove a productive individual from the workforce. Therefore, my approach begins with integrating specialized healthcare as a pillar of economic resilience.

This involves deploying mobile clinics to rural and farming communities to conduct basic screenings for hypertension and diabetes—the leading causes of kidney failure. Early detection is a powerful, cost-effective form of prevention that keeps the agricultural backbone of our nation healthy and productive. A healthy farmer is a productive farmer, and securing their health directly secures our food supply and local economies.

Furthermore, digital empowerment is crucial in this fight. My approach would leverage technology to create a network of tele-nephrology, where general practitioners in remote areas can consult with specialists in real-time for patient management advice.

Digital platforms can also be used for massive awareness campaigns on preventive renal health, reaching people directly on their phones. We can use SMS alerts for medication adherence, apps for tracking blood pressure, and online databases to manage patient records efficiently, bridging the gap between urban specialists and rural patients.

By ensuring our farmers are healthy through farm security initiatives and using technology to democratize access to specialized knowledge via digital empowerment, we create a stronger, more productive society. A nation cannot be economically resilient if its people are battling preventable health crises; thus, safeguarding health is the first and most important step in building a prosperous Nigeria for all.
